One of the most publicized and even tried diet of today is based on an excessive intake of protein and a carbohydrate deficiency.
The theory behind this diet is based on avoiding carbohydrate consumption of any origin (fruits, fruit juices, vegetable roots, beans, bread, rice, pasta and any kind of grain) and the consumption of foods rich in protein and fat ( meat, cheese). After this stage, will follow a more relaxed period in which are placed some vegetables or fruit, but dominant in the plate are proteins and fats.
Due to high consumption of meat, dairy fat, animal protein and saturated fat, a number of research institutes. monitoring cardiovascular disease and cancer have begun to alert the population about the risks that involve low-carbohydrate diets:
- Colon cancer – is the most common cancer in Europe and North America and one of the killers of nature. It is considered that for long periods, the daily consumption of meat, especially red meat (pork, beef or lamb) is associated with an increase of three times the risk of colon cancer and that because red meat products do not contain fiber, the protectors of colon.
- Cardiovascular diseases – in general, weight loss tends to reduce cholesterol levels, while consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol tend to rise. Supporters of this diet say that clinical studies show a decrease of LDL (bad cholesterol) and an increase in HDL (good cholesterol) following the diet. People who kept this diet were given nutritional supplements such as linseed oil (containing fibers), chromium (inhibit appetite for sweet), vitamin E and C (antioxidants) and multivitamins and exercise were also scheduled. The idea supported by some media materials of this diet that “consumption of meat and dairy products that are high in fat and cholesterol, is safe. This statement totally contradicts the opinion of cardiologist who claim that, even after only one meal consisting of protein and fat, the arteries may be affected, increasing the risk of heart attack.
- Complications of diabetes – diabetes, kidney and heart may raise a number of problems. As control of blood cholesterol and protect the kidneys are essential to diabetic medical community that recommend choosing diets rich in fruits and vegetables and limiting saturated fat, cholesterol and animal protein.
- Osteoporosis – is well known that high consumption of animal protein stimulates urinary excretion of calcium (calcium losses are 55% higher than the normal value) and thus increase the incidence of fractures.
- Other adverse effects: after a period of 6 months of hyper protein diet was also found following adverse effects:
- Constipation (69%)
- Headache (60%)
- Muscle cramps (35%)
