When you start a diet your motivation level is high, your willpower is strong, and you laugh in the face of temptation. Unfortunately this phase doesn’t last forever. Once the honeymoon period is over, your willpower will fluctuate, and temptation will be waiting in the wings ready to catch you out. In order to keep moving forward with your weight loss, you need to be one step ahead of the game.
In the Kitchen
Multipacks are not a dieter’s friend. If there are various treats and goodies hanging around the kitchen cupboards, anytime you have a weak moment, they will call out to you. Instead of buying treats in bulk, buy individually as you need them. If other family members want treats in the house, identify foods that they like, but you don’t. This way you won’t be tempted to eat them.
At the Gas Station
When you pay for gas, are you tempted by the treats on display? One way to avoid temptation is to pay at the pump. If you must go to the kiosk, buy yourself a non-edible treat instead, such as a magazine.
At the Supermarket
Whenever you enter a supermarket you are subjected to sounds, sights, and smells, designed to entice you to spend more. If you regularly find yourself coming home with goodies you couldn’t resist, switch to buying your groceries online. If you prefer to go to the supermarket, however, take a shopping list and stick to it.
At Work
Whether your downfall is the vending machine, the afternoon lull, or a colleague’s birthday cakes, you need a plan of action. Avoiding the lure of the vending machine can be as simple as leaving loose change at home. If you fancy a mid-afternoon treat, have healthy snacks such as fruit, or low-fat cereal bars, readily available. You can also dip into this supply when colleagues bring in birthday cakes, so you don’t feel left out.
Whatever your temptation is, if it’s not there in the first place, you can’t give in and eat it.
