Q: How long should you massage?
Depending upon the thickness of the cellulite, work 10 to 20 minutes on a particular area. Ten minutes should be sufficient for the tummy but don’t hesitate to devote up to 20 minutes to the upper thighs and hips.

Q: When should you massage?

Massage can be included in your daily schedule without a lot of nuisance. Like any other therapeutic method, massage must be regular to be effective. If you can’t manage it everyday try for at least every other day.

There area few simple ways to incorporate self-massage into your life. The easiest is to massage in the tub. The sitting position is very good for working on & legs and upper arms. You can work on the buttocks and hips after you towel dry. If you prefer a shower, be sure you are secure and steady on your feet. Use a rubber bath mat or those non-slip strips for safety in the tub.

You can quietly massage while watching television or driving on long trips — when someone else is at the wheel. You don’t need lots of space or any special clothes. You just need a strong desire to get rid of your cellulite.

You can massage any time of the day but it’s best to wait at least two hours after eating. The most convenient time for most women is after the bath or shower — and preferably one that includes a brisk body rub with a loofah friction mitt. A bath is relaxing and massage benefits you most when you are relaxed. You are better off skipping the massage if you are tense or in a rush. When you are tense, or hurried, you constrict the channels through which the released wastes and residues from the massage are flushed out.

Q: What are the massage movements used?

There are five massage movements used to help break down cellulite. They are: stroking, kneading, knuckling, “S” formation and wringing. Each has a specific value in the prescribed order and performs a different function.

Light stroking prepares the skin for the massage movements that will follow. Wringing, knuckling and “S” formation, all forms of kneading, break down and dissolve the cellulite nodes. It is the deep stroking, always used at the end of each session, that helps send the wastes loosened by kneading on their way through the system and out of the body. If the deep stroking is omitted or neglected, the value of the entire massage is lost. So, by all means, follow the specific progression as it is listed.

1. Light Stroking – It describes the long, fluid movements that “caress” the skin in one direction only — toward the heart. This massage step readies the area for the heavier movements that follow.

2. Place your hands flat and gently curve your fingers to conform to the shape of the area being massaged. With a sliding movement, stroke the area, always going upward toward the heart when doing legs and hips and clockwise when doing the tummy.

3. Deep stroking ends every massage. It is a heavy stroking movement, at full pressure, going in the direction of the heart. This increases blood and lymph circulation, relieves congestion.
